The Lambourn Shed enjoyed a productive and sociable evening as members filled 100 sandbags in preparation for the possibility of flooding in Lambourn this winter.
The initiative was made possible by the generosity of Fort Builders Merchants, which donated all the sand and bags needed to prepare the 100 sandbags. They will be stored on pallets at a local yard, ready for rapid deployment by tractor if flooding occurs. This emergency stock will supplement the arrangements made by Lambourn Parish Council under its LPC Sandbag Policy.
Lambourn has experienced both surface water and groundwater flooding in the past, and West Berkshire Council warns that flooding may become more frequent as the climate changes. Residents can check the risk near their home using the Environment Agency’s long term flood risk service. Surface water flooding can affect properties well away from the River Lambourn, so it is important to check both the river and surface water flood maps.
A huge thank you goes to Penny Brewer of the Lambourn Environmental Group, who initiated the project after researching the likelihood of flooding during the coming winter months. Her initiative means that the village will have an additional supply of ready filled sandbags that can be distributed quickly to where they are most needed.
The Shed team turned the work into a thoroughly enjoyable community event. As well as filling all 100 sandbags, members enjoyed a barbecue with delicious food and drink, making it a warm and welcoming social occasion. Special thanks go to Adrian and Jo for organising the refreshments and barbecue.
This was a wonderful example of local people and businesses coming together to undertake practical work that could make a real difference to the community.
